The thing about the desert is that since it's literally deserted you're going to find a lot of strange and abandoned things. In the desert, anything goes. Here are 5 things you'll only find in Palm Desert and you have got to experience when in the area.
Did you own cactus for $0.59!
Everyone knows Joshua Tree National Park is a cool place, you’ve probably already checked that one off your list. On you way back to civilization stop at Cactus Mart for dig-your-own-cactus for just 59 cents! Th garden guys there are funny and will teach you how to pluck, replant and care for your cactus once you get it home. These mini cacti are a must-have souvenir from the desert! And if you have a brown thumb like me, you’re in luck! They only need to be watered once every couple weeks to stay alive!
Visit the international banana museum
When you pull up the international banana museum you may be ready to see bananas from around the world in a traditional museum setting. But this is the desert so what you’ll see is a gas station liquor store with a giant stuffed banana sitting outside. For $1 you enter the small shop to the side of the shop and what you’ll find is the world’s largest collection of banana memorabilia. All kinds of weird banana stuff, more than you could ever imagine, lives here. The shop owners bought the collection on ebay years ago and has doubled it since. Michael Sara has been here they say, so you know its cool.
Tip: Get your entrance fee back by buying a banana-flavored desert from the bar. The fosters shake is SO good and the tender’s banana jokes will keep you entertained!
Tip 2: Ask about the banana costumes!
If fish boneyards and abandoned towns are your thing then you’ve got to visit the Salton Sea. Every July the algae in this giant lake blooms and kills all the fish. Fish bones liter the shore of this deserted sea. To add to the creepiness there’s an old abandoned ship and the remnants of piers and civilization that once thrived here.
With all the creepy abandoned crap around the desert you know there’s going to be a Jesus freak. Some God fearing (probably cracked out) guy spent years building and mountain a mountain of prayer. It’s weird, you have to see it. Check out the weird tree rooms he’s making too. No explanation, it’s just weird.
Tip: keep going a few more minutes to see the sole tree, East Jesus, the hostel and all kinds of weird, creepy “art” the people that squat there have created.
Probably the least weird thing, and most cool thing in the desert is the Painted Canyons ladder hike. Hidden though dirt roads in the mountainous area of the desert is this awesome trail. You’ll hike into slot canyons, up and down ladders and across vast colorful (hence Painted) mountain ranges. Really cool and a must do in Palm desert!
