Palm Desert is a funny place. So many strange things to see and so much wide open space with absolutely nothing out there.
Hidden deep in the desert is one of the coolest trips I’ve ever hikes – Painted Canyons, sometimes known as ladder canyons. To get there you have to drive on unpaved, uneven roads for a few miles. You’ll lose cell service, but there’s only one way to go so you can’t get lost. Eventually you’ll reach the end of the line and will see other cards parked along the side.
Big canyon walls surround you as you walk into the opening. Look for piles of rocks in the shape of an arrow to show you the way. Once you get in there a little you’ll see one pointing you to a wall of rocks – time to start climbing! You’ll go through slot canyons, have to climb up boulders and up and down ladders. This is a really cool hike, bring your camera!
At a certain point you’ll climb out of the canyon and walk up and across a huge mountain range. It’s beautiful up there! You’ll go back in the canyon, down a few more ladders and out through a loop the same way you came in.
The hike takes about 3 or 4 hours and has moderate moments, but any skill level can do this hike with enjoyment.
