One of my new years resolutions last year was to finally get a brazilian wax. At the very end of DecemberI finally did it! This is my experience, and advice if you're going in for your first one too.
Chelsea and I after our appointments
Take a couple Advil to help with pain and inflammation. You could also drink a couple glasses of wine like I did, but it’s not going to save you from the pain you’re about to experience.
It’s not awkward unless you make it. I sat around pantless while I got a lip wax, casually conversing with the waxer before we actually got down to business. She was nice, friendly and gave me a lot of info on the process and the aftercare. We also joked about horror stories she’s been through with other clients and it eased any awkwardness there might have been otherwise. Just relax, strip down and let it all hang out. It will be over soon!
It hurts! This is obvious, but until you actually feel the pain you won’t understand. The lips hurt the worst, the butt area hurts the least. Fortunately it goes in that order so you can get the worst out of the way as soon as possible.
I went to European Wax Center in PB (Bridgette is awesome) and there they use there are self-hardening wax that forms its own strip. They don’t just put on one strip and you’re done, they have to go over the same area a few times. Sounds awful (and it is) but the wax only attaches to your hair, so your skin is never pulled and subsequent strips hurt less than earlier ones.
It only takes about 15 minutes. Just breathe and bear through it. It will be over before you know it.
It will be red. Don’t expect to go struttin’ you baby smooth vajayjay right after your appointment. It will be red and tender for a day or two. You can still get red bumps and ingrown hairs. I suggest purchasing the ingrown hair serum!
Within a few weeks you will need to go in for another wax, but it will be much thinner and much more sparse. You will be able to let those hairs grow out long and hardly notice them! The next time you get waxed you’ll have much less hair and it will be thinner so it won’t hurt as bad! With time, you will only need to be waxed every 5+ weeks!
When all is said and done waxing is worth it. The pain is terrible, but temporary and the results are worthwhile.
