Boxing is the type of workout that makes you feel intimidated and like a badass at the same time. Up until this month I let fear keep me from stepping into a class, but curiosity and my 12 Workouts in 12 MonthsChallenge pushed me into it eventually. I searched for women-only boxing classes in San Diego because going to my first boxing class with women seemed much more attainable then with a group of muscular men punching things. I quickly found a women’s class and it was free to try too!
One weekday evening a friend and I went into the American Boxing Gym in Pacific Beach San Diego for the women’s only class. There was only one other girl in the class who had been a couple times before. Good, we’re all newbies. But there was a co-ed class going on in the same room and it did look intimidating.
I loved boxing!
This class combined boxing technique with challenging cardio circuits to both tone your body and strengthen your boxing skills. The class was very much focused on “do as a say only” type of leadership. The female teacher taught us the proper stance and form to jab, cross punch and slide away from an incoming hit. She taught us the footwork to “dance” with another boxer and let us practice combinations of all of them on punching bags and with her. Punching things is so much fun! The technique combined with the cardio worked up a sweat I haven’t seen from any of my usual workouts lately. Boxing is an amazing workout!
At the end we were offered a paid week trial to further test it out. Although I really enjoyed the workout I can’t see myself giving up the other types of exercises I enjoy to be present for boxing multiple times a week. Had it been an option to come in once a week I would have been on board, but this gym doesn’t operate in that way so I had to pass. The friend that came with me, however did take the offer and she liked it!
The verdict: Boxing is awesome, a great sweaty workout and gets out all your angers and frustrations! If you haven’t tried it I definitely recommend you do!
