I really enjoy being single, but something I do miss about being coupled up is date nights. Going to a new restaurant or a romantic picnic by yourself if just not the same, ha. I honestly feel I would make the best romantic, sweet date-planner. But since I’m not planning dates for myself and I am single I wanted to share some of my great date ideas with all of you. These not-so-usual plans for a day or night out are specific to San Diego, but if you don’t live in the area hopefully you can still pull some inspiration.
Pour Your Own Beer + Play
Barrel Republic in Pacific Beach (also in Oceanside) is a unique bar where you get a wrist band and use that to pour your own beer and wine from the rotating taps lining the walls. You can flirt your way through IPAs, sours, porters, ales and all the other varieties the two of you desire. Once you’ve found your special blend you can trade your ID for a board game rental like Connect Four or Cards Against Humanity and bond with your special someone over a little friendly competition.
Not everyone has the luxury of owning their own hot tub, but each of us could have the adventurous spirit to sneak into a place that does. I recommend AVA and Bay Pointe Apartments in Pacific Beach, or Vantage Point in East Village. All of these large scale units (and many of the other big ones around the city) have residents constantly coming in and out that would be so kind as to hold the door for you. I used to live at AVA and recommend that hot tub! Once you’ve made it in laugh over your mischievous victory while soaking in the warm, relaxing jets.
Ride the roller coaster at Belmont Park together. It costs just $6 and you the two of you will be laughing together while soaking in views of the ocean. Up the romance even more by catching a ride around sunset time when the skies are lit up with all the colors of the rainbow. When the ride is over move onto mini golf, arcade games, drinks at a nearby bar or a romantic walk on the beach that lies just steps away.
Stand Up Comedy
Laughing together brings people closer. Mad House Comedy Club in the Horton Plaza hosts shows every weekend and free parking at the Horton Plaza comes with your ticket. There is a Social in San Diego MeetUp group that offers free tickets all the time, all you have to do is be there by 9:15 p.m. and say you are with MeetUp. Image the two of you in a dark room, cuddled up close, laughing over the same jokes.
Cruise Mission Bay
The Bahia Belle picks people us every in the evening. Friday and Saturday Nights (and a nice brunch cruise on Sundays) are the best for its themed nights as it cruises along Mission Bay. After 10 p.m. the boat turns 21 and up and during the Bahia Belle after dark, drink specials are offered for $5 and there is live music to to get you both in the mood.
Slide into a Speakeasy
Bring your date to a speakeasy, but don’t tell him/her that’s where you’re going. They will be so confused when you walk them toward a bathroom and then start pushing on a wall of kegs. It will be the sweetest surprise. Noble Experiment downtown is a great one, but text their number to ensure you have a reservation. The drinks are amazing (ask for the bartender's special) and the décor just begs for corner of the room kisses. There are several other speakeasies around the city, including a new one set to open in Pacific Beach later this year.
If there’s one thing you take away from this, it’s that you should dare to venture out from the usual “let’s grab dinner and drinks” date. Be adventurous, be different, laugh and have fun with your time together!
