Afternoon Tea is the cutest thing. Have you ever heard of it?
It’s not just sipping tea. The basic rundown of “afternoon tea” is that each person selects their own pot of tea and then is treated to a prix fixe course of treats from mini sandwiches to scones, fruit and an array of deserts like cookies, mouse, personal size cakes and more. All the treats are served to you on a multi-tiered platter and garnished with cute flowers and other little decorations. It’s adorable.
One Sunday afternoon in February I went with two friends – Brittanie and Chelsea – for the 3:30 seating of afternoon tea at Shakespeare’s Corner Shoppe in the Mission Hills area of San Diego. We, of course, wore big floppy hats and floral print clothing, because that’s what you do at afternoon tea. Or so we thought.
The small outdoor deck was the perfect backdrop for a warn San Diego afternoon of snacking, sipping tea and catching up with friends. Upon checking in we browsed the shop and sniffed the various tea leafs before each selecting are own pot to be brewed. Once seated our tea pots were brought out and we added cream and sugar cubes (my first time trying tea this way) to make it taste even better! This was followed by yummy celery soup – a real delight after starving while waiting to be seated.
After the starters, the main course was delivered complete with cute and classy presentation. There were a handful of different sandwiches (mine were specially made vegetarian). My favorite was the one with a little piece of asparagus on top. The veggie sausage roll was good too, the cucumber sandwich was scrumptious, they were all amazing!
Moving down the tier was the fresh strawberries, clementine wedges and raisin croissant with butter cream and jam. By this time we were all starting to fill up, but not before desert on the bottom tier! Mini strawberry mouse, cookies, fruit tart and a surprise fudge brownie brought out at the end were all SO good! Desert is my favorite meal of any day and afternoon tea was no exception.
Afternoon Tea was everything I dreamed it would be and I cannot wait to go again! If you plan to go remember to arrive a few minutes early and reserve about an hour and a half to slowly experience each and every sip and bite. This is a leisurely experience to be enjoyed among friends – a great place for a girls day, or family get together with the gals. Guys, you’re welcome to join too!
