The Lazy Hippo is a cute breakfast and lunch café nestled into a quiet Downtown neighborhood just blocks from the vibrant gaslmap and hip little italy areas.
You're immediately greeted with decorations on the walls – cats, cats and more cats! This could have something to do with it being right next to the San Diego Cat Cafe. The outdoor space is charming and inviting, the indoor tables are cute, colored and the chair cushions have cute mismatching fabrics that somehow all go together. Any restaurant that serves water in chic glass vases and individual mason jars has won me. My favorite part of the ambience was the paper table cloths and colored pencils – which were sharpened upon our arrival – for everyone’s artistic/boredom pleasure.
The service was sweet, we were seated right away and since the place wasn’t all that busy at 2pm on a Saturday we were given all the right attention and all the right times. Our waiters brought over water right away (we probably looked hot after just walking from the Little Italy Farmers Market) an they provided helpful tips on what the best menu items were. Our waitress gave me the courage to try a new dish, that I very much enjoyed, and probably would never have tried otherwise.
What we ate:
We didn’t drink anything except water, but I was eyeballing the mimosa and acai smoothie. When I go back I will be trying those!
