I moved to San Diego nearly a year ago and have since fully taken on the role of beach bum and made my rounds to many shores along the San Diego coastline and while I love each one for its own character, I have narrowed down my favorite top five beaches in San Diego and their reasons why.
1. Pacific Beach - Best beach to get a drink
This area gets a bad rap for being a party town –and maybe it is – but it’s also one of the only beaches in SD where you can enjoy a mega margarita and the sun set over the ocean all at the same time. Also happens to be where I live, so I love PB that much more.
2. La Jolla Shores - Best beach to swim with sharks
Yes, sharks. Lots of them, but don’t worry these five-foot sand sharks are harmless. Just watch out for the sting ray and jelly fish! This is also one of the cleanest and prettiest beaches I’ve found. It's a great place for kayaking and SUP too!
3. Torrey Pines - Best beach to get a workout
Beautiful views and miles of trails from ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. This is the place to take a hike and soak up San Diego's beautiful coastline.
TIP: Come early for free parking or bring $15 for paid parking close to the trail head.
4. Garbarage Beach at Sunset Cliffs - Best beach to fly under the radar
A primarily locals-only beach that only be accesed one of two ways: using a makeshift rope to repel down a 15 foot cliff or, if the tide is low enough, climbing down the stairs and across the rocks to the sandy shore.
5. Mission Beach - Best beach to be a tourist
Maybe I’m just bias toward beaches with bar/restaurants on the boardwalk. My first week in SD was spent sipping drinks on the highchair along the boardwalk at Wavehouse pinching myself because this was just too good to be reality. As if I had any doubts about this new place I would call home, they vanished in that umbrella-drink-sipping moment. Pure bliss!
